PG Lacrosse was a founding member of our present league: Southern
Maryland Youth Lacrosse Association that sponsors high-level league play and
play-offs. The league had its origins in 1989 with PG, Calvert, Bowie and
South Bowie. We all had only one youth team made up of boys from 7th to 9th
grades. The initial purpose of the league was to develop high school varsity
team caliber players.
The league has evolved and expanded in teams and levels of teams.
SMYLA now has three divisions with four or five teams from the surrounding
area North as far as Urbana and South as far as St. Mary's. We have 4 age
levels which mirror US Lacrosse: Juniors--U-14, Midgets--U-12, Peewees--U-10
and as of the last couple of years Bantams--U-8. The Juniors and Midgets
play under US Lacrosse High School rules with a couple of exceptions
(one-handed stick checks, 5-goal mercy rule). Peewees players don't use
long-defense poles and Bantams--play a "coach-on-the-field" instructional
game.
SMYLA has hosted a festive tournament play-off weekend in Bowie every year
and in 2005 had All-Star North versus South games for top Junior, Midget,
and Peewee players from each club. Bantams enjoyed round-robin games both
weekends.
PG promotes lacrosse in the area of Prince George's County between Laurel to
the North and Bowie to the South. We have trained high school coaches and
players and our alums have played Division 1 college lacrosse! Mostly, we
are glad to introduce and refine the skills so that boys and girls (and
their parents) can enjoy great game of lacrosse!
